Monero Wallet Not Syncing? How to Fix It
Monero wallet not syncing, or stuck on Attempting Sync or blocks remaining? Fixes for Cake Wallet, Feather, Monerujo and Monero One.
By Joe, founder of Monero One
Is your Monero wallet not syncing? It usually has one of four problems. It cannot reach its node, the node is slow or stuck, the scan is still running, or the restore height is wrong. Your XMR stays on the blockchain the whole time. This guide explains what each sync status means, then gives the fixes for Cake Wallet, Feather, Monerujo and Monero One.
A sync fix never needs your seed. Type your seed only into a wallet app on your own device. If someone in a chat or a support ticket asks for it, they want your XMR.
We make Monero One. The fixes below work in any Monero wallet, and we link each wallet's own docs.
How We Checked
On October 17, 2026, we read the Cake Wallet and Feather docs, the Monerujo source code and the Monero project's docs. For Monero One, we read the app source code at the versions in the stores: iOS 1.0.9 (10) and Android 1.0.9 (15). We quote each app's own labels. We did not test the other apps by hand for this guide.
How a Monero Wallet Syncs
Your wallet asks a node for blocks. Then it checks each block on your device for payments to you. Feather's docs put it simply: "All block data is scanned locally."
The scan starts at the wallet's restore height and runs up to the newest block. A new block comes about once every 2 minutes. That is about 720 blocks a day, so a wallet that is a year old has about 260,000 blocks to check.
So a sync can stall in three places: the connection to the node, the scan itself, or the start point.
What Each Sync Status Means
| Status | Wallet | What it means | First fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disconnected | Cake Wallet | The wallet cannot reach the node | Switch networks, then nodes |
| Cannot reach node! | Monerujo | The wallet cannot reach the node | Try again, then another node |
| Connecting... that never ends | Monero One | The wallet cannot reach the node | Pick another node |
| Attempting Sync | Cake Wallet | Connected, and getting ready to sync | Switch nodes if it stays |
| Blocks remaining | Cake, Feather, Monero One | The scan is running | Keep the app open and wait |
| A count that stops moving | Any wallet | The node is slow or stuck | Switch nodes |
| Synced, or no status | Any wallet | The scan is done | Check the restore height if a payment is missing |
Cake's docs describe Attempting Sync this way: "Your wallet has connected to a node, and is currently exchanging information before the sync begins." If it stays there, try another node.
When Cake is synced, the sync area at the top of the home screen is empty. Feather's status bar reads "Synchronized." Monero One reads "Synced."
Fix 1: Check Your Network
Some networks block wallet traffic. Cake's docs say: "Some cellular data providers might block cryptocurrency-related connections." They add that some Wi-Fi networks have firewalls that restrict your connection.
Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way around. Then watch the status again.
A VPN can help or hurt. It can get you past a blocked network, and Cake's docs also note that "certain VPN providers may block or restrict access to cryptocurrency nodes." Try the sync with the VPN on, then with it off.
Onion nodes (addresses that end in .onion) work only over Tor. If you use a Tor app such as Orbot, it must be running. Otherwise, pick a node with a normal web address.
Fix 2: Switch to Another Node
Cake's docs call a slow, overloaded or distant node "the most common cause" of a slow or stuck sync. They also say: "If your wallet won't connect or sync, switching nodes is the first fix to try."
Every wallet in this guide lets you pick a node. The steps for each one are below. If you need more choices, the Monero project's Moneropedia names Monero.fail as "one of the most famous node aggregators," a public list of nodes. A node you pick can see your IP address, so read our guide to what a Monero node sees first.
If you add a node by hand, check the SSL setting. Cake's docs say "the most common mismatch is SSL enabled on a non-SSL port or vice versa."
Fix 3: Check the Date and Time on Your Phone
Many nodes use SSL, the same lock that protects websites. An SSL certificate is valid only between two dates. Under the standard for these certificates (RFC 5280), a certificate passes only if "The certificate validity period includes the current time." If your phone's clock is far off, that check fails and the wallet cannot connect.
Let your phone set the time itself:
- iPhone: open Settings, tap General, tap Date & Time, then turn on Set Time Automatically.
- Android: open the Clock app, tap More, then Settings, then Change date and time. Turn on Automatic date and time.
Fix 4: "Blocks Remaining" Means the Scan Is Running
A blocks remaining count is good news. The wallet reached a node and is checking blocks. Cake's docs say to "keep the wallet app open until the number reaches zero."
The first sync after a restore can be long. The Monero project's FAQ says that with a remote node, your device "still needs to request a copy of all the outputs, which can take several hours."
To help it along:
- Keep the wallet open on screen. Cake's docs say to keep the app "open and in the foreground."
- Use Wi-Fi. Cake's docs suggest Wi-Fi "rather than using data" when a sync is slow.
- Plug in your phone if the scan will take a while.
Fix 5: The Sync Is Stuck at One Height
When the count stops for a long time, the node is the usual cause. It may be overloaded, or it may lag behind the network. Cake's docs say that changing to another working node "often gets syncing going again."
You can check how far along things are. Monerujo's node list shows the time of the latest block that each node knows, so an old time means a node that lags. Feather shows your wallet's height in Help, then Debug Info. Compare it with the newest block on a public block explorer such as xmrchain.net, which Feather's docs use.
An old app can stop syncing too. Feather's docs say: "Some Monero protocol updates are backwards incompatible, old wallet versions stop working eventually." Update the wallet app from its store or its official site.
Fix 6: Synced, but a Payment Is Not Showing Up
If the wallet says it is synced and a payment is missing, check the restore height. Feather's docs explain it: "If the restore height is set too high, synchronization will skip over some of your earlier transactions leading to an incomplete transaction history and incorrect balance."
Set the restore height to a date before your first payment, then scan again. An earlier date means a longer scan. Cake's docs say an earlier height "never puts your funds at risk." Our guide to a Monero balance that shows zero after a restore covers this step by step.
For one missing payment, search for the transaction ID on a block explorer. Feather's docs say that if it does not show up there, "the transaction wasn't relayed properly." Ask the sender to check on their side.
New XMR also waits for 10 confirmations, about 20 minutes, before you can spend it.
Monero Wallet Not Syncing: Steps for Each App
Cake Wallet Not Syncing
- Pull down on the home screen. Cake's docs say this makes the wallet "reconnect to its current node."
- Tap the gear icon at the top right. Under Wallet settings, tap Nodes.
- Pick a node with a green dot. Cake's docs say: "Only nodes highlighted with a green dot will work; red dots are unavailable."
- Keep the app open until the sync area at the top of the home screen is empty.
- If a payment is still missing, open Settings, tap Connections, then tap Rescan. Pick a date about a week before you created the wallet.
A rescan clears your history and shows 0.0 XMR until it finds your payments again. Cake's docs warn that it "will remove any saved transaction keys and destination addresses." On Android, Cake can also sync in the background. Turn it on in Settings, then App settings, then Connections, then Background sync.
Feather
- Read the status bar. It shows the blocks remaining, then "Synchronized" when the scan is done.
- To change the node, go to Settings, then Network, then Nodes.
- Check your version in Help, then About. Feather's docs note that "All Feather versions 1.0.1 and below stopped working after August 13 2022."
- If you set Feather to sync over Tor, expect a slow sync. Feather's docs say sync is "known to take much longer over Tor" and recommend a normal internet connection for it, which is the default.
- For a wrong restore height, see Help, then Debug info, for the current value. To scan from an earlier date, restore the wallet from its seed again with File, then New/Restore.
Feather runs on computers only. If you want your Feather wallet on a phone, see our guide to Feather Wallet on iPhone or Android.
Monerujo
Monerujo shows plain error messages:
- "Cannot reach node! Try again or another." means the node did not answer.
- "Node invalid! Try another." means the node gave a bad answer.
- "Node connection failed! Check username/password" means the node wants a login.
- "Node version incompatible - please upgrade!" means the node or the app is out of date.
To fix a node problem, open the node list from the wallet list screen. Pull down to refresh it. Then bookmark 3 to 5 nodes. Monerujo's help says this lets the app "choose the best one for you." Each node shows the time of its latest block.
For a missing payment, open the wallet's menu and tap Rescan! to scan again. When you restore a wallet, the Restore Height field takes a block number or a date in the form YYYY-MM-DD.
Monero One
- Open Settings, then Sync Settings. The Status row shows Synced, Connecting... or Scanning with a percent. Below it, you see the percent complete and the blocks remaining.
- If Connecting... does not end, tap Remote Node. Each node shows its response time. On Android, a node that does not answer shows Unreachable.
- Tap another node. This turns off Auto Select. To let the app pick a node again, turn Auto Select back on.
- Check Use Tor Proxy on the same screen. When it is on, the wallet connects to its node through Orbot or another Tor app that you install yourself. If that app is not running, no node connects.
- On iPhone, if the wallet screen says Paused, Trusted Locations stopped the sync. With the Block Sync mode, the wallet syncs only inside a place you trust. To change it, go to Settings, then Sync Settings, then Manage Locations, and set Outside Trusted Zones to Warn Only.
- If a payment is missing after a full sync, go to Sync Settings, then Restore Height, and pick an earlier date.
As a last step, Reset Sync Data scans the wallet again from the same height. It is near the bottom of Settings on iPhone, and under Danger Zone in Settings on Android. It removes the transaction keys for your past sends, so copy any you need first.
FAQ
Is my XMR gone if my wallet will not sync?
No. Your XMR lives on the Monero blockchain, and your seed controls it. A wallet that is not synced cannot show your balance yet. Your funds are still there.
How long should a Monero wallet take to sync?
It depends on the node, your network and how many blocks the wallet has to check. A wallet that synced yesterday has about 720 new blocks to check. A fresh restore of an older wallet can take hours.
Why does Cake Wallet say Attempting Sync?
Cake has reached a node and is getting ready to scan. If it stays on Attempting Sync, Cake's docs say "changing nodes might help." Pick a node with a green dot.
Why is my XMR wallet stuck on blocks remaining?
Your wallet is scanning, and the node may be slow. Keep the app open and use Wi-Fi. If the count does not move for a long time, switch to another node.
Should I restore my wallet again?
Usually not. Switch the node first, and check your network and the date on your phone. Restore again, or rescan, only when the wallet is synced and payments are missing because the restore height is too late.
Can a node take my XMR?
No. Feather's docs say a remote node "cannot steal your funds" and "doesn't know your balance." It does see your IP address. Our node privacy guide explains what else it can see.
